Belachan (shrimp paste) is a common ingredient used in South East Asia. It is made from fermented (up to several months) shrimp mixed with salt. It is an essential ingredients in curries, sauces and of course sambal belachan.
In Malaysia, the way we have our belachan is sun dried and cut into rectangular blocks. Thus before consumption, you need to toast the belachan prior to bring out the flavour, however the process creates a strong aroma/odor, which may not be accustomed in countries outside South East Asia.
Thus, we are now sourcing the powder form, which is already toasted and ready to use. Thus saves time!
