Nasi Lemak

Day 4 and last day of the Nonya Cuisine Made Easy; we are looking at nasi lemak and its accompaniments.

This is a very easy to prepare dish and will definitely be a hit with your guests!

Nasi Lemak is a Malay term. Nasi means rice, and lemak means fragrant rice cooked in rich and creamy coconut milk with fragrant leaves. It is a very popular dish in Malaysia; so much so that even most Malaysian airlines will serve it on their flights.

So, to start off with, you definitely need the “nasi lemak” (coconut rice)- Recipe here. Then it is up to you how you would like to add the accompaniments.

Traditionally, the basic accompaniment will be sambal!

The rest will consist of sambal udang, sambal squid, fried anchovies, fried peanuts, hard boil eggs, acar awak, curries, cucumbers etc to go with the rice. It should look like the above image, plus curries.

OK – so for fast and easy sambal – instead of starting from scratch, try the Little Nonya Ikan Bilis sambal. Then use the Little Nonya Ikan Bilis sambal and branch out to prepare sambal udang, sambal udang petai and squid sambal (substitute prawns with squid).

Acar awak (recipe coming soon), peanuts – (the trick is to use beer nuts) and fried ikan bilis. (I only have 10 packets left – so order as soon as possible.)

Here are the recipes for:
