WHAT DO YOU WANT?

When I was growing up, I understood that my parents were busy; in fact, they were very busy.  They worked two jobs to support the family, and they cared for the extended families as well, so naturally they were constantly tired and exhausted—sometimes to the extent of being completely overwhelmed.

When people ventures into an overwhelmed and tired state of being, several things could happen:

  • They may snap at the slightest things, which they will later regret.
  • They will not be in the best position to make the best decisions for their family.
  • Resentment will creep in and their “negative” beliefs will start to take over their thoughts.

When you are in such state, you are exerting a very negative energy, not only on yourself but towards everyone around you (i.e., your family). Basically, when you do not function at optimal happiness, everyone at home will not function well either. In another words, your home will be a very unhappy place to be!

How do you overcome this?

The first step is to take control. You probably know that at some point in time, the constant running has to stop, either you personally being conscious about it, or your body will give you the signal to stop.

The next step is to identify the cause. Now, take out a pen or pencil and a piece of paper; ask yourself this question:

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Are you in the position to answer this question straight away? I know some parents would be very surprised to be asked this question, and I am no exception. How many of you have ever been asked this question and are considering it now for the first time?

This is a very simple question, but for some, it may require some effort to come up with the answer.

Notice that when you ask young children what they want, they will tell you without any hesitation exactly what they want – such as a big house, the chance to fly a rocket to the moon, a truck, to be superman, etc. However, as we grow older, we are bombarded with a busy lifestyle and are programmed by fear and guilt.  Guilt starts to infiltrate our minds from society, our families, schools and movies; and we gradually start to lose the connectivity to ourselves and start to move in a direction of what is expected of us.

So right now, give yourself an opportunity to reconnect to the little child in you again.

Take a minute to think about it and write down WHAT you actually like? What do you wantin life? What do you want to achieve in your career? What do want for your family? Basically, KNOW WHAT YOU WANT!

Knowing what you want in life is crucial; in fact, it is paramount as it allows you to channel your energy and focus towards it.

For example:

  • I want a happy family life.
  • I want to be a great parent.
  • I want to finish my course or degree within the next year so that I can apply for my dream job.
  • I want to travel every year with my family.
  • I want to write.
  • I want to spend at least X amount of time with my children each week.
  • I want to have some quality time with my spouse each week.

Do you see what I mean?

Now take a minute and write out several points stating WHAT YOU WANT.

Understanding who you are and knowing what you want as a parent is crucial to self re-discovery.

It’s a critical first step!

Knowing what you WANT is the first step to take charge of your life, and so finally be able to control your time, know what to focus on and how to channel your energy! We need to stop and think, and then take steps to gain back control.
